With a deep passion for environmentalism, I wanted to write a piece evoking our tragic relationship with water. The Great Lakes St. Lawrence River Basin Sustainable Water Resources Act, or GLSLRBSWRA, was an attempt by the Great Lakes states to begin down a path towards conservationism. This initiative did little to mitigate the pollution and abounding populations of "invasive species," leaving me with a longing desire for more action.
Growing up in Wisconsin and attending school in Cleveland Ohio, I have always been a member of the Great Lakes ecosystem. One of the topics I was interested in while writing GLSLRBSWRA was the abundance of micro-plastics in consumer products. These plastics slowly work their way into the water table and back into our own bodies. While this piece begins on the frigid morning overlooking the endless frozen water, the second half follows the chains of pollutants to the Atlantic Ocean, and your blood is flowing with plastic.
This piece was premiered in Cleveland, Ohio on February 21st, 2015.
